Ongoing maintenance increases profitability and maintains operational reliability

The availability of a vehicle charger relies on well-functioning infrastructure that is properly managed and maintained. This is particularly important if the charging station is used for public charging. The importance of ongoing maintenance is therefore vital to maintain long-term functionality and good economy in the investment.

Svensk Fordonsladdning always offers its customers an operation and maintenance agreement for the facility. With today's different types of chargers, there are also great opportunities to troubleshoot and fix malfunctions remotely. To avoid downtime, it is important to regularly maintain the equipment according to the manufacturers' recommendations. It is also important that the installation owner is aware of the obligations imposed by the Electrical Safety Act.

Maintain charger value and increase reliability

Most manufacturers of charging equipment require the relevant service technician to be certified through the manufacturer's own training courses. In addition, they have often developed their own checklists and protocols for service technicians to follow during these regular maintenance activities.

Johan Lundback, who has been a service technician at Svensk Fordonsladdning since 2022 and now works as a project manager, explains why you should take good care of your facility.

- To maintain the value and reliability of a charging station, regular maintenance must be carried out. This maintenance includes changing filters and checking the torque on electrical connections. In connection with a review of the charger, the software in the charger is also checked and updated.

More wear and tear on chargers in big cities is natural

- Some charging stations also wear much more than others, so we always start with a visual inspection. In big cities, the chargers are used more often and by more people, so there is naturally more wear on them. Even though charging contacts and card readers are very durable, these are the components that are used the most and therefore also wear the most, says Johan.

With today's technology, Svensk Fordonsladdning can carry out several technical operations remotely, but even relatively small and quick operations may require a visit to the charger on site to perform the job.

- Chargers contain many safety features and these sometimes cause them to stop temporarily. This may be due to a sensor failure, for example. Although this can be quickly remedied, it requires the replacement of a small measuring sensor or fuse on site. It is of course positive that chargers have many built-in safeguards to ensure that they shut down if there is a risk.

Quick action ensures a safe charging station

However, Johan does not feel that chargers are particularly vulnerable to vandalism or sabotage. Rather, it is accidents that sometimes lead to situations where the device could become dangerous.

- It's rare, but it does happen that cable cabinets or poles that have been hit can be so damaged that they lie down and expose cables. It can be dangerous for the public, but this is always remedied very quickly by us or the electricity network companies, he says.

- It also happens that we receive error reports on chargers even though there is no problem with the hardware itself. The end customer may experience a problem with charging, but often it is linked to the payment service itself. Normally, the customer has one minute to start charging after they have plugged in the car. If the card terminal does not have time to send the information to start charging within that time frame, there may be a hassle with the payment service, which in turn may lead the customer to believe that the charger is faulty.

Strategic to invest in ongoing operation and maintenance contracts

Most charging products come with a manufacturer's warranty of 2-5 years, but Johan again emphasizes the importance of investing in an ongoing operation and maintenance agreement for the products.

- It is incredibly stupid to ignore maintenance if you want your equipment to work well over time. The profitability of the investment increases significantly through ongoing maintenance that extends the life of the product, Johan concludes.
